We are made in God’s image.

We are made in the image of God—the same God who:

Creates
Loves
Forgives
Cares
Guides
Works
Rests

What?

Yes, God works. He created the heavens and earth. He created all the creatures.

Once His initial work of creation was done, He rested and then went back to work. He takes care of us. He listens to us and answers our prayers. He performs miracles.

He works. And He rests.

Because we are made in His image, we are at our best when we are doing what He does: working and resting. We are at our best when, in the course of our work, we allow ourselves to be God’s instruments. We are at our best when, after we have worked, we take the time we need to rest, to relax, to revitalize ourselves so that we can do more work.

We were made to do meaningful, purposeful activities that serve the world God created. We see that early in the Bible when God placed Adam in the garden to “work it and take care of it” (Genesis 2:15).

God’s message to work joyfully and to the best of our ability continues throughout the Bible. “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters” (Colossians 3:23).

The message to rest is equally clear. God rested. Jesus rested. And we are to rest and trust God to take care of things.

Work and rest are fundamental to who we are. They are what our Creator intended for us. They are how we live out our faith and serve Him and one another.

We work and we rest because that’s what God does.
