When I heard about America May God Thy Gold Refine, the story behind it captivated me.
Charles A. Stakely IV’s family found the almost-finished manuscript after his death and decided to publish it. The book stands as a tribute to him and as an important message to Americans on why we must know and understand our history and the role that Christianity played in establishing and building our country.
Stakely has clearly done his research. When he writes about the early settlers and the evolution of circumstances that ultimately led to the colonists declaring independence, fighting the Revolutionary War, and forming what would become the greatest nation on Earth (okay, I admit to personal bias—I love my country), he puts you there. He doesn’t gloss over the pain and physical misery. He doesn’t romanticize the challenges, defeats, and victories. He tells it like it was.
But he does more than that. Going beyond a recitation of the historical facts, many of which are not commonly known, Stakely includes the biblical perspective and discusses the faith that drove and strengthened the country’s early leaders. He talks about why their and our Christian faith is essential if the United States of America is to continue as a strong nation that provides opportunity for its people and blesses the world.
America May God Thy Gold Refine explains why faith and virtue are essential to our form of government and indeed our way of life. It provides tools to use to counter the revisionists who would rewrite our history in an effort to create a secular country.
Stakely’s style is mostly conversational, although he does shift into academic mode occasionally. When that happens, stick with him and keep reading—it’s information worth knowing.
