The Many Meanings of Medium

I’m developing an online class on how to promote your business using the publishing platform Medium (watch for an announcement and link when we launch it). Of course, I have to say the word “Medium” over and over in the training. And it got me thinking about the many meanings of medium.

With a little help from Google, I put together this list.

An agency or means of doing something.

“using customer referrals as a medium for lead generation”

A means or mode of communication or expression.

“the primary medium of instruction in U.S. schools is English”

A channel of communication, such as television, radio, or the internet.

“a growing number of people prefer the internet as their medium of choice for news”

A means of effecting or conveying something.

“no physical medium is necessary for radio broadcasts”

The substance in which an organism lives or is cultured.

“laboratories use a variety of mediums in which to grow bacteria”

A particular form of storage for digitized information.

“the data is backed up on multiple mediums, including magnetic tapes and hard drives”

The material or form used by an artist, composer, or writer.

“the artist’s primary medium is watercolors”

A liquid with which pigment is mixed by a painter.

“the painter prefers oil over water as an exterior paint”

A person claiming to have the ability to communicate with the deceased.

“the medium said he had a message from her grandmother”

The middle quality or state between two extremes.

“let’s try to find a happy medium to resolve the conflict”

About halfway between two extremes.

“the man was of medium height and build”

Something in the middle position.

“the shirts came in small, medium and large”

A go-between or intermediary.

“she served as the medium of communication between the two men”

Do you know any other definitions of medium?
