Why I have faith about tomorrow

On September 11, 2001, Jerry and I watched, horrified, as planes flew into buildings, as those buildings came crashing down, as thousands of people died and lives changed forever.

Nothing in our lives had prepared us for something like that.

In our safe suburban enclave, we were bewildered and frightened.

We spent the day glued to the television. Then, for some reason, I went out into the garage—and it was flooded. Water was pouring out from the air conditioner.

I called the company that had installed it. When the owner answered my call, I said, “I can’t believe I’m calling you about something so mundane after what’s happened today, but …”

I don’t remember exactly what he said, but it turned out that the unit’s drain was clogged. Instead of making a service call, he told my husband how to clear it with a garden hose and what to do to make sure it didn’t happen again.

That’s when I knew that the world was not ending.

I believe that simple clog and honest business owner was God’s way of telling me that the world was still full of good, faithful people whose work on Earth was not finished.

So do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. (Isaiah 41:10, NIV)

Since then, people have touted climate change, COVID-19, and more to signal that the end of the world is near. But for the past 2,000 years, people have seen signs they thought foretold the Second Coming.

“But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. (Mark 13:32, NIV)

We are facing tremendous challenges. We’re all concerned about social unrest, political upheaval, and general turmoil. But instead of letting it drag me down, I focus on what I can do.

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. (Romans 12:2, NIV)

Though I don’t know what the future holds, I know that God will be with me every step of the way. That’s why I have faith about tomorrow.
