It doesn’t matter where you are, treasure this time
I clearly remember crossing the finish line the first time I ran a marathon. But what I remember more are the things that happened along the way—waiting anxiously in the start corral, the interactions with other runners along the route, the snacks handed out by encouraging volunteers, and yes, the stress on my body. I also remember the months of training, preparing for those grueling 26.2 miles.
The finish line was important. It was the goal. But getting there was even more important.
That’s how life is. Our dreams are important, but living every day is what matters.
So I recommend having fun, because there is nothing better for people in this world than to eat, drink, and enjoy life. That way they will experience some happiness along with all the hard work God gives them under the sun. (Ecclesiastes 8:15, NLT)
We need goals. We need a destination. But we should never lose sight of the fact that God wants us to enjoy the journey, to revel in the daily things we are doing to live out His purpose for our lives.
They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity—all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved. (Acts 2:46-47, NLT)
When our worldly dreams come true, we’ll celebrate—but what we’re going to treasure are the memories of getting there and the blessings we received along the way.
