When you have a chance to brighten someone’s day, do it
I just got off a call with Gail Porter, one of my favorite writer friends. She was having some technical issues and needed someone to brainstorm solutions with.
As we were wrapping up and I was wishing her luck (because even though she insisted otherwise, I didn’t think I’d provided much help), she said there was one more thing she wanted to tell me.
She reminded me of an arts and crafts festival nearly two years ago where she, I, and some other writers shared a booth to promote our books.
My husband, Jerry, had come along to help with the setup, teardown and general support (books and displays can get heavy and cumbersome). When it comes to these sorts of events, Jerry will do anything I need, but he prefers to stay in the background.
Gail said I was at the front of the booth talking to people and Jerry was at the back, watching me. She said the expression in his eyes was so full of love that she has remembered it even after all this time, and she wanted to tell me.
Do I know how much my husband loves me? Of course. He’s not a mushy romantic, but he still shows me every day, in big and small ways, even when I’m not being particularly lovable.
Still, it made my heart swell to hear my friend talk about how she could see his feelings for me on his face. And as I sit here with a happy smile on my face, feeling blessed by my husband and my friend, I’m reminded of the importance of sharing those little things, of taking a moment to brighten someone else’s day whenever you have the chance.
Thanks, Gail.
