Have you ever been in a networking situation where you're feeling a bit stuck for conversation?

You’re in a crowd, you’ve introduced yourself to someone and neither one of you seems to have anything else to say? Or you want to learn more about a person you've just met, but you're looking for a more effective way to do it than the usual Q & A (or inquisition)?

Let me introduce youTry introducing your new contact to someone else who may also be of interest to you – then let them do the talking.

Introduce each person with a sentence or two explaining what they do in a way that hints at why they would want to know each other.

Example:

“Mary, let me introduce John. John owns an insurance agency that specializes in small businesses. John, Mary is a veterinarian who is in the process of opening her own practice.”

Don’t let the conversation turn to you – keep the two of them focused on each other. You’ll probably learn things you didn’t know about them that you’ll be able to use to your mutual benefit later.

In addition to gaining additional insight, you’ve positioned yourself as a master networker and you’ll be fresh in their minds after the event.

Of course, you’ll want to follow up to maintain that positive impression. Send a note, connect on LinkedIn, make a phone call – however you do it, be sure to reinforce the meeting.
