Email templates are a tremendous productivity tool, but your readers shouldn't be able to tell that you're using a template.

Ask any woman who has ever shown up at a party and seen another woman wearing the same outfit how she feels. That's how you ought to feel if someone recognizes your templates because they've seen them used by another company.

The week before Christmas, I received holiday email messages from three different companies that used the email service provider MailChimp — emails using an identical format, colors and graphics. The only difference was the text.

customize your templatesBoth free and paid email service providers offer users templates that make it easy to set up marketing messages, and those templates usually allow for substantial customization. Take the time to customize your emails with fresh, original images; your logo; a different font; and/or different colors. Consider rearranging the elements in the template for a different look (most allow you to drag and drop).

You may have a wonderful message to share, but if your email looks the same as those that others are sending, your audience may never realize it. Differentiate yourself visually as well as in your content.
